Developing fume-free explosives for safer underground mining
Research completed by a team at Mining3 in MRIWA project M0482 has demonstrated the potential for new explosive hydrogels based on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to replace existing explosives used in underground mining. In addition to eliminating release of nitrates and toxic nitrogen gas compounds, H2O2-based explosive gels produced lower levels of carbon monoxide, improving safety while performing at a similar standard to conventional explosives.
