MRIWA TECH TALKS:

Indicator Minerals for Nickel Exploration

The hunt for valuable Nickel resources, hidden deep beneath the surface, has presented multiple challenges in the past due to their smaller size deposits. Traditional technology has therefore been expensive and missed important clues to mineralisation in the exploration process.

This project, funded from 2022 – 2024, aimed to deliver new exploration method for the use of indicator minerals when searching for nickel. By recognising a variety of consistent chemical markers present in different minerals formed around valuable nickel mineralisation – particularly minerals that may survive the weathering of their host rocks in the harsh Western Australian landscape – the research team at CSIRO identified new insights to guide mineral exploration more effectively towards undiscovered ore bodies hidden beneath the surface.
