Challenge
For Magnetite processing there is a need to clarify the potential benefits and limitations of different ore types and assist in shaping Australia’s green steel strategy.
To identify the cost implications of magnetite ores, it is important to evaluate the benefits of high iron content and lower energy requirements against the potential drawbacks of higher mineral processing costs.
Proposed Solution
Evaluating the transition from NGDRI to H₂DRI, including carbon pricing and CCUS, comparing the economic viability of green steel from magnetite ores across Australian regions, assessing costs relative to Pilbara-based green steel. The project includes some preliminary experimental, anticipated as TGA and high-flux radiation, pre-oxidation and hydrogen reduction testing to assist in providing kinetic/sizing information for the end-to end modelling.
Proposed Benefits to WA
The project will unlock the opportunity of the range of Magnetite resources in the Pilbara and the mid west and determine the best pathways to economic development of these resources and how they compare to other magnetite resources.
