Independent testing undertaken in MRIWA project M10549 confirmed that increasing roller diameter well beyond current Pilbara standards delivers significant reductions in Indentation Rolling Resistance (IRR), which is the dominant contributor to conveyor energy loss. Testing showed IRR reductions of up to 68% compared with conventional rollers, substantially outperforming incremental gains achievable through established conveyor idler upgrades.

The project also demonstrated lightweight composite rollers can address historical challenges associated with large diameters, offering a combination of strength, durability, and ease of handling meeting all relevant Australian standards.
