Algae is making waves as a game-changer for post-mine land uses. Dr. Anna H. Kaksonen, Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO, and her team have published a ground-breaking report on cultivating algal biomass in contaminated mine site water.

Their Stage 1 project reveals significant environmental and economic benefits, especially for mine closure, Traditional Owners, and regional communities.

The research shows that algae could transform polluted water into a resource, supporting sustainable land rehabilitation and economic opportunities. With support from partners like CSIRO, The University of Queensland, Murdoch University, South32, Fortescue, Rio Tinto, Heidelberg Materials, the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA), and others, this initiative is gaining momentum.

Next steps involve lab-scale evaluations to pinpoint the best technologies for scaling up. Want to dive deeper? Join Dr. Kaksonen’s webinar on April 30 to explore the findings first-hand, register. Check out the media release or fact sheet for more details.
