Electric haul trucks can reduce emissions in mining, but batteries and power electronics must be kept within safe temperature limits, especially in hot operating conditions.

As part of MRIWA project M10550, Electric Power Conversions Australia (EPCA) designed, built and tested a thermal management system for a retrofitted Caterpillar 777D battery‑electric haul truck.

The project covered design and modelling, manufacturing and installation, control system development, commissioning and mine‑site load testing.

Results highlight the importance of coolant flow control and recommend separating battery cooling from high heat‑load components such as motors and inverters to improve long‑term reliability.
