Net Zero Emissions RD&D Inventory 2025
The purpose of this inventory is to inform coordinated strategic investment in technologies critical to decarbonising WA’s heavy industry.
The Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) is proud to support the Net Zero Emissions Research, Development, and Demonstration (RD&D) Inventory 2025. This strategic initiative aims to build a public-facing inventory of pre-commercial technologies to inform Western Australia’s heavy industry in the transition to net zero emissions. By mapping current and planned RD&D activities, the project will help develop a shared understanding of the state’s capabilities and opportunities in low emissions technology and innovations.
The research is led by Phoebe Tran, a Chemical Engineering Honours student at the University of Western Australia (UWA), under the supervision of senior academics Brendan Graham and Einar Fridjonsson from the UWA School of Chemical Engineering. The project builds on MRIWA’s Net Zero RD&D Roadmap and is co-sponsored by the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (DEED).
The purpose of this inventory is to inform coordinated strategic investment in technologies critical to decarbonising WA’s heavy industry. It will support more efficient use of public and private funding and contribute to ongoing assessments of emissions reduction strategies. The final inventory will be published on MRIWA’s website in a non-proprietary, machine-readable format, and will be used to inform whole-of-government discussions, identify gaps, and guide future funding opportunities.
Participation is open to WA based individual researchers, research organisations, and businesses that are undertaking or planning to undertake research and development projects or activities to further the development of pre-commercial technologies required for decarbonising heavy industry. This includes any programs or initiatives that fund R&D in this area. If your organisation is contributing to this space, you are encouraged to complete a short survey (10–20 minutes) online or via the downloadable survey form. Alternatively, you may opt for an interview via Microsoft Teams or in-person. To schedule participation or discuss in-person options, please contact Phoebe Tran at 23652937@student.uwa.edu.au.
All personal and confidential information will be protected in accordance with WA legislation and MRIWA’s privacy policy. During the project, data will be securely stored on UWA-provisioned Microsoft Teams/SharePoint services located on Australian servers. Upon completion, datasets will be transferred to MRIWA and retained for a minimum of seven years, in line with the State Records Act and MRIWA’s Recordkeeping Plan. Protected information such as personal details, intellectual property, and confidential content will be excluded from public release.
Participation is voluntary with no payments for participating. You can choose to end your participation at any point without implications. Data that has been submitted will be retained, requests for exclusion from further use and/or publication are accepted at any time with no reasoning required by contacting the research team. Your involvement will contribute to coordinated action supporting WA’s net zero energy transition and help identify opportunity gaps in the RD&D of technologies needed to decarbonise heavy industry.
For further information, please contact Phoebe Tran at 23652937@student.uwa.edu.au.
The survey is open from the 1st – 30th of September 2025.
