The Cook Government has announced the establishment of a new Early and Mid‑Career Researchers (EMCR) Reference Group, marking an important step in supporting the next generation of Western Australian research leaders. The initiative aims to elevate the voice, visibility and influence of emerging researchers across the State, helping ensure Western Australia continues to build a strong and sustainable science and innovation ecosystem.

Supported by the Chief Scientist of Western Australia, Professor Sharath Sriram, the Reference Group is designed to empower early and mid‑career researchers, who are key contributors to WA’s future scientific capability and innovation workforce. The group will help strengthen professional networks, enhance national and international exposure, and create more opportunities for EMCRs to engage in science policy and strategic programs.

The new Reference Group will contribute to the work of the WA Science and Technology Council and support the broader implementation of the State’s 10‑Year Science and Technology Plan. Through its activities, EMCRs will gain access to platforms that help expand their professional presence, build peer mentoring connections, and engage more effectively in policy and advocacy initiatives.

By ensuring that early and mid‑career researchers have a direct voice in the development of government programs, the initiative aims to make science and technology policies more aligned with the real needs and priorities of researchers working at pivotal stages of their careers.

Membership of the Reference Group brings together leaders of EMCR networks from public universities and medical research institutes across Western Australia. Representatives from 11 organisations have been invited, offering a diverse and multidisciplinary cohort of participants. These include leaders from:

  • Ear Science Institute Australia
  • The Kids Research Institute Australia
  • Institute for Respiratory Health
  • Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research
  • Edith Cowan University
  • Curtin University
  • Perron Institute
  • The Australian Academy of Science’s EMCR Forum (WA representative)
  • Lions Eye Institute
  • The University of Western Australia
  • Murdoch University

This breadth of representation reflects the State’s vibrant research landscape and strengthens the network of collaboration across institutions.

In announcing the initiative, Science, Innovation and Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson emphasised the critical role that early and mid‑career researchers play in driving new discoveries, economic diversification and long‑term innovation capability in Western Australia. The Reference Group provides a channel for emerging research leaders to influence strategic decision‑making and elevate the State’s global research reputation.
