The Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Program continues to address mental well-being, positive workplace culture, and safety in the Western Australian mining industry by supporting exceptional students through PhD Scholarships.

MARS Program PhD Scholarships continue to support exceptional students in minerals industry research, emphasising the importance of workplace culture and safety in the Western Australian minerals sector. Four new awardees are tackling significant challenges:

  • Neil James at Edith Cowan University is exploring how psychological capital can enhance psychological safety in the mining industry.
  • Benjamin Walsh at Edith Cowan University is assessing occupational hygiene dust sampling devices for risk-based exposure measurements in Australian mining operations.
  • Nousheen Fatima at Edith Cowan University is examining the impact of psychosocial risk factors on workforce sustainability and workers’ behaviours in mining.
  • Patrick Benetti at the University of Western Australia is researching how leaders can effectively communicate safety stories to improve safety outcomes.

Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael stated: “The MARS Program PhD Scholarships are key to positioning Western Australia as a global leader in workplace safety and mental health in the mining sector. This research will help drive innovative solutions and support sustainable workforce practices.”

Training and Workforce Development Minister Simone McGurk added: “The mining industry has come a long way in recent years when it comes to addressing issues around the health and well-being of workers, but there is more to be done.”
