Piercing the darkness – live geophysical sensing during drilling
Smarter Drilling, Better Discoveries
Published: 2 June 2026
Traditional exploration drilling can be a guessing game, with multiple holes needed to understand the hidden geology and test each target. But thanks to innovative down-hole detectors developed in MRIWA Project M10445, that’s changing.
These sensors detect subtle changes encountered in rock properties while drilling, helping geologists make real-time decisions and even steer the drill toward promising mineral targets. That means fewer holes, lower costs, and faster discoveries of hidden ore bodies.
