The Cook Government has officially appointed Professor Sharath Sriram as the new Chief Scientist of Western Australia, following the retirement of Professor Peter Klinken AC, who served in the role for over a decade.
Professor Sriram, who begins his three-year term today, becomes WA’s fourth Chief Scientist. A highly respected leader in science and research, he brings two decades of experience in science, engineering, and medical technologies. His appointment marks a new chapter in advancing Western Australia’s science, technology, and innovation agenda.Currently serving as President of Science & Technology Australia, Professor Sriram has been a strong advocate for science policy and innovation strategy. His work has focused on fostering cross-sector collaboration, supporting commercialisation, and developing long-term strategies to strengthen Australia’s research and innovation ecosystem.

As Chief Scientist, Professor Sriram will provide independent, strategic advice to the WA Government on matters related to science, technology, and innovation—helping to shape the State’s future in emerging industries and global competitiveness.

Farewell to Professor Peter Klinken AC

This appointment follows the remarkable tenure of Professor Peter Klinken AC, who was appointed in 2014 and is the longest-serving Chief Scientist in WA’s history. Professor Klinken played a pivotal role in shaping key initiatives, including:
