Assessment, design and operation of battery-supported electric mining vehicles and machinery (FBI CRC No. 028)
Electrifying mining fleets slashes emissions, cuts costs and unlocks safer, high‑performance operations—driving Australia’s next wave of mining competitiveness.
Electrifying mining fleets isn’t just a decarbonisation strategy — it’s a competitiveness strategy. Mining is Australia’s second‑largest carbon emitter, and fleet electrification is a powerful lever for change.
The MRIWA‑funded project Assessment, design and operation of battery-supported electric mining vehicles and machinery (FBI CRC No. 028) was delivered through the now‑concluded Future Battery Industries CRC (FBICRC). Its research remains highly relevant and is being carried forward via the Powering Australia Industry Growth Centre.
Key findings show potential for lower operating, energy and ventilation costs, zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and safer working environments.
The team is working on developing an online free tool that could help miners examine various fleet electrification strategies that is tailored to their mine.
