The Challenge
To ensure the minerals industry meets Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, a focus on responsible mining practices, reduced footprints and mitigation of environmental impacts are essential. Despite technological advancements, legislative bodies and research institutes lack knowledge on novel and emerging Precision and Low Impact Mining (PLIM) technologies.
Proposed Solution
This research project aims to define, identify and assess novel and emerging Precision and Low Impact Mining (PLIM) technologies that are utilised in the exploration and extraction stages of the mining value chain. Specifically, the research will identify technologies that increase the precision and/or decrease the environmental impact of exploration and extraction where such technologies have been or have the potential to be implemented in the Western Australian minerals industry.
Proposed Benefits to WA
The research will provide vital guidance to the strategic planning for MRIWA and promotes the advancement of technologies that will enable responsible mining. A quantifiable definition will establish a clear classification, enabling identifications of future PLIM technology research opportunities, and to identify knowledge gaps and emerging technologies.
