The Challenge

Western Australia’s Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) sector plays an important role in developing and commercialising technologies for the minerals industry. MRIWA’s METS Innovation Program forms part of a dedicated $3 million initiative supporting innovation, knowledge transfer and commercialisation through matched funding and targeted engagement, facilitation and collaboration. The Program has funded 14 industry-led projects, offering up to $250,000 per project with at least matched cash contributions.

An independent review is needed to assess the Program’s progress, effectiveness, efficiency and strategic alignment, including its contribution to technology adoption and commercialisation. The review will examine stakeholder participation, governance, the funding model and the management and coordination required to deliver the portfolio, identifying barriers and opportunities to strengthen future impact.

Proposed Solution

MRIWA has engaged Damburst Pty Ltd to undertake an independent strategic review of the METS Innovation Program. The review will combine analysis of program documentation and the 14-project portfolio with stakeholder input to assess performance and develop practical recommendations for program refinement, resourcing and impact enhancement.

Proposed Benefits to WA

The review is intended to provide MRIWA with an evidence-based assessment of how effectively the METS Innovation Program supports Western Australian businesses to develop, commercialise and adopt new technologies. Its recommendations will inform future program structure, delivery, resourcing and evaluation, with opportunities to improve stakeholder engagement, collaboration and knowledge transfer. These improvements are intended to strengthen the competitiveness and capability of WA’s METS sector and enhance the impact of innovation investment in areas including low-emissions mining, critical minerals, automation, precision mining and the beneficial use of mine waste and tailings.
