Hongqi Sun

Biography

Dr. Hongqi Sun joined the Board in 2023. He is Director of the UWA Centre for Future Catalysis, University Professor of Chemistry, and an ARC Future Fellow (Level 3) at The University of Western Australia. He is UWA Lead for the Critical Metals for Critical Industries CRC and Co-Chair of the School Research Committee. He previously held academic positions at Edith Cowan University (Professor, 2016 – 2023) and Curtin University (2009 – 2016).

He serves as a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts (since 2022) and is Editor-in-Chief of Cleaner Chemical Engineering (Elsevier). He previously served as Chair of the ECU Research Professoriate.

A leading researcher in catalysis, renewable energy, critical minerals, and environmental technologies, his work spans emerging areas including space-related chemical systems and sustainable resource utilisation. He has published over 350 refereed journal articles, with more than 49,000 citations and an h-index of 122 (Google Scholar, May 2026). He was awarded Mid-Career Scientist of the Year at the 2023 WA Premier’s Science Awards and named among Australia’s Top 40 Research Superstars (Lifetime Achiever; Top 5 in Chemical and Materials Science) by The Australian’s Research Magazine (2020).
