METS Application Information
The METS Innovation Program is embedded within MRIWA. It supports research projects led by METS companies servicing WA’s mining industry, with a focus on rapidly translating research into commercially viable outcomes.
The Program includes a $500,000 annual funding pool for industry-led, METS-related R&D. Support includes matched funding of up to $250,000 for eligible Financial Assistance holder companies, and facilitation support for collaborative projects.
Projects should align with MRIWA’s strategic focus areas, including low-emissions technologies, precision and low-impact mining, critical minerals, and alternative uses for tailings and waste.
Talk to MRIWA before you apply Contact any MRIWA Research Portfolio Manager early to discuss your proposal. They can help confirm alignment with MRIWA priorities, identify collaboration opportunities, and guide you on application requirements and timing.

Assessment and funding decisions
Eligible applications are assessed by a Research Assessment Panel against the merit criteria. The Panel then makes a recommendation to the MRIWA Board.
The lead investigator and representatives from participating organisations may be invited to present to the Panel and answer questions. MRIWA may also request written clarifications.
Funding decisions are typically made by the MRIWA Board within three months of submission.
Funding agreement
All approved projects will require a funding agreement which must be executed between the respective parties before any payment of funds.
Potential applicants are encouraged to review the Conditions of Grant and share a copy with all participating organisations. Early review can expedite contract negotiation if the application is approved by the MRIWA Board.
Please contact MRIWA to request a pro forma copy of the Conditions of Grant.
