Maintenance management practices which underpin the A$205 billion/year of export earnings from Australia’s resources sector have changed little in the last 20 years and are ripe for a digital overhaul bringing developments in computational methods, statistics, applied mathematics and artificial intelligence to determine how, when and why maintenance is conducted.

Exploring how this challenge is being tackled, Melinda will discuss how natural language processing and ontologies are key to unlocking information available in maintenance documents to validate Industry 4.0 efforts such as predictive maintenance, at scale and whether machine readability of unstructured texts will enable decision support solutions for activities that need a human-in-the-loop for maintenance management and automate activities that don’t.
