The Challenge

Platinum Group Metals (PGM’s) are needed for a range of new applications including hydrogen electrolysis and industrial chemical production. In Western Australia the industry is not well understood despite the abundance of resources.

Proposed Solution

Stage 1: Scoping study to determine the potential of extraction and processing of existing resources and potential other sources of PGM such as tailings or by products.

  • The current research programs will be examined. The knowledge bank available in WA for processing and best opportunities to progress research and industry participation.
  • Collaboration with industry to be encouraged by engaging with stakeholders around the prospect of green platinum, multi user facilities. Include a possible structure to enable this collaboration.
  • Explore potential partnership to encourage technical knowledge and advancement including indications of potential investment sources in subsequent phases of project in developing processing capability.

Proposed Benefit to WA

By understanding the best pathways to produce concentrates in Western Australia the downstream processing of PGM’s can be developed.

PGM processing also has synergies with other critical minerals and therefore the processing could help the economics of other projects by allowing the processing of by products and recycle.
