Sustainable Land Use Post-mining

Summary

Fourteen species of sedges, rushes and bulrushes were studied to develop suitable propagation techniques.

Rhizome transplantation techniques were developed following trials made at three wetland sites and under controlled conditions at Murdoch University.

Seed germination of different species ranged from 0 – 100%.

The effects of timing, site of seed collection, temperature and seed pretreatments (seed coat removal, scarification, leaching and boiling) were investigated.

Keywords: wetlands, rehabilitation, sedges, rushes, bulrushes, propagation
